Review of Cantina Milwaukee
Cantina is a new tequila and taco restaurant located in downtown Milwaukee that offers a diverse menu of food and drinks in the fun, relaxed atmosphere of a taco bar. The restaurant opened in fall of 2017 and has already been nominated for a 2018 Diners’ Choice award by OpenTable.
Cantina is just one block away from the Milwaukee Bucks’ new arena and plenty of other downtown attractions, including the convention center and Milwaukee Theater, so you won’t be far from the action.
The location of the new establishment is ideal, allowing groups to enjoy outstanding Tex-Mex cuisine, margaritas, and more before or after attending various events throughout downtown Milwaukee.
As for the food, well, Cantina Milwaukee has just about everything. The appetizers on the menu range form the expected (loaded nachos, quesadillas, guacamole) to the unexpected (Cantina Curds, Coyote Wings, Shrimp Ceviche) to the more traditional, including elotes, roasted corn tossed in a crema sauce with cilantro and house seasonings.
There are nearly two dozen bistro tacos to choose from, split into categories: chicken, steak, pork, From The Sea, beef brisket, and Won Ton Taco. There are also smothered burritos, fajitas, and taco salads, as any Tex-Mex joint worth its salt would include. (Of particular interest: the East Coast, featuring battered chicken, buffalo ranch, blue cheese, cabbage, and carrots, as well as the Sweet Heat, a beef brisket taco with fresh apple pomegranate salsa and cotua cheese.)
In terms of beverages, there is a long list of both import and domestic beer available. The house margarita can be served for an individual or by the pitcher – or even in their famous 100-ounce Margarita tower.
Oh, and did we mention that this is a taco and tequila bar? Cantina isn’t just limited to the house margarita, of course. They offer more than 65 varieties of tequila, and there are 12 different house specialty cocktails on the drink menu, too.
Cantina offers plenty of themed nights and additional excuses – as if the bistro tacos and margarita tower weren’t enough – to make it out to the establishment any night of the week. The weekly schedule includes Buy 2 Tacos, Get 1 Free on Mondays, $2 Taco Tuesday (and Thursday!), and more. There are even specials on gamedays for virtually every sports team in the area, including the Bucks, the NFL’s Green Bay Packers, the University of Wisconsin Badger football team, as well as other local universities.
Also, if you’re hanging out prior to catching a ball game, then you’ve picked the perfect spot. Cantina offers shuttles to see the Milwaukee Brewers play at Miller Park beginning two hours before the first pitch of each home game – a genius move for a bar and restaurant that finds itself in the thick of most of the activity in downtown Milwaukee, but still a little ways away from Miller Park.
If you’re looking for the latest and greatest when it comes to tacos and tequila – and, let’s be honest, who isn’t? – than look no further than Cantina Milwaukee.
